Commercial License Activation


1. Activation

th activation_how_to_get_commercial_licenseThe commercial license activation is required after the purchase transaction has been completed. The activation process allows receiving the commercial license dedicated for the particular machine. Online and offline activation is available.

NOTES:

  • Only commercial activated licenses are locked to the particular machine.
  • During the activation process, identification and registration is required. Any key file (evaluation, demo, commercial not activated and other) can be used for the identification of the license owner.
  • Commercial not activated keys allow using the application for 7 days according to obtained licenses, before requesting activation. Not activated keys can be used during activation process for identification of the account on which the purchases are.

  1. Click the Activate button in the License Manager dialog.
  2. Proceed with the particular product activation.

Choose online activation and enable commercial activated licenses automatically.

Alternatively, you may select offline activation and get the Host ID, enter it in the license owner account (login to www.nomagic.com and select License Activation Management menu item at the right side of page) and then download the commercial activated license.

1.1. Particular Products Activation

1.2. Offline activation

  1. Login to the license owner account on www.nomagic.com.
  2. Click the License Activation Management item in the Members menu.
  3. Click the Create New License Activation Record button and enter the user details, Host ID of the machine, and select products licenses, which will be activated for this machine.

Download the license key file or send the key file to your email.

1.3. Commercial not activated and activated license

Terms:

  • Not activated license is used only to determine the account on www.nomagic.com and allows using the application for 7 days according to obtained licenses, before requesting the activation.

    Example: MagicDraw_16_9_Professional_C#_Standalone_key.txt

  • Activated license is the license without expiration, locked to the particular machine, and can be deactivated.

    Example: Activated_key_for_<name>_<surname>.txt

After the purchase transaction has been completed, you will receive commercial not activated keys. They are used ONLY to determine the account on www.nomagic.com from which activated keys should be requested. Any other license, evaluation, demo, or commercial can be used for identification of the license owner account during activation.

Commercial not activated license requires activation. It allows using the application for 7 days according to obtained licenses, before requesting the activation.

You may choose online or offline activation.

After the online activation, commercial activated license will be applied automatically and you will be able to use the application on the particular machine.

During the offline activation you will be required to enter a Host ID in the license owner account (login to www.nomagic.com and select License Activation Management menu item at the right side of page). You can then download the commercial activated license and select it from the application.

1.4. Host ID

A Host ID is the value of a specific system attribute (MAC / Ethernet address) that uniquely identifies the host / machine under which an application is running. A Host ID is used for the locked to particular machine license. Only commercial activated licenses are locked to the particular machine.

1.4.1. Determining a Host ID using lmhostid

One of the ways for determining Ethernet address (Host ID) is using lmhostid utility. This way can be useful when the list of Host IDs of multiple machines should be discovered, even before installing the applications itself. If you are a system administrator, you can provide end users with commercial activated licenses without requesting licenses from them.

The lmhostid is a command line utility, which prints the Host ID that is required. The Lmhostid utility is available as an executable called lmutil. Download it for a particular OS from http://www.globes.com/support/fnp_utilities_download.htm.

Run lmutil with lmhostid parameter from the command line. Lmhostid displays the default hostid for the current platform.

NOTE: If two or more Ethernet addresses are available on the particular machine, the first one printed by the hostid command should be used.

1.5. Identification

To determine a license owner, the user identification is requested during activation process. Identification is requested only if you have not added any license key file, have not registered your installation, or have not performed identification.

There are two methods available for the user identification:

  • License file based identification. Select the license key file to identify the license owner account. Evaluation, demo, or commercial license files can be used for the identification.
  • Login name based identification. Use the license owner login name and password to identify on which account on www.nomagic.com your purchases are.

Once identification is performed, it will not be requested the next time during activation.

NOTE: In case you need to change identification records, just apply the new license key file. The last applied license key file is used for the identification.

1.6. Registration

The user registration is required during activation process in order to obtain the commercial activated license.

The registration will help us to provide you with:

  • Customer support. Issues, questions, and suggestions can be reported and existing ones tracked on support.
  • Access to early releases and evaluations.
  • New versions, patches, and updates.

2. Deactivation

The deactivation is the process, which allows returning commercial activated licenses. You may remove and return all activated (locked to the particular machine), not used commercial licenses by deactivating them.

2.1. Deactivating a license in the application

  1. Click the Deactivate button in the License Manager dialog of the application or uninstall the application.
  2. Commercial licenses will be deactivated automatically and returned online. If the online licenses return is not available, licenses will be deactivated and offline deactivation – licenses return message with License Deactivation ID - will be shown. To update the account information manually, return the used license by entering the License Deactivation ID to the license owner account (login to www.nomagic.com and select License Activation Managementmenu item at the right side of page).

NOTES:

  • A deactivated license still will be active for 7 days.
  • The returned licenses can be activated on the same or another machine.
  • Online deactivation from the application side or the deactivation with the License Deactivation ID is treated as the confirmed deactivation case and does not decrees an available rehost limit.

2.2. Deactivating from the License Activation Management screen

You can deactivate licenses not only from application, but also from the License Activation Management screen in the license owner account (login to www.nomagic.com and select License Activation Management menu item at the right side of page).

NOTE: The deactivation from the License Activation Management screen should be used only if the deactivation from application side is not available: installation has been lost or corrupted.

To deactivate an application without License Deactivation ID from the license owner account:

  1. Go to license owner account (login to www.nomagic.com and select License Activation Management menu item at the right side of page).
  2. Go to License Activation Management screen.
  3. Click on the Activated Products column for the particular installation record.
  4. EDIT LICENSE ACTIVATION RECORD dialog appears.
  5. Select the Deactivate tab in the EDIT LICENSE ACTIVATION RECORD dialog.
  6. Select all products in the Deactivate tab and click the Deactivate Selected button.
  7. Record will be marked as deactivated. Licenses will be treated as returned.

NOTE: The number of available, not confirmed, deactivations from the License Activation Management screen is 1 for the each obtained license per year. The Confirmed deactivation case from the application side will not decrease the rehost limit.

2.3. License Deactivation ID

License Deactivation ID is the value of a specific system attribute that uniquely identifies license deactivation/return from the particular host/machine under which application was running. The License Deactivation ID is used for the license offline deactivation.

To determine License Deactivation ID (for offline deactivation):

  1. Click the Deactivate button in the License Manager dialog of the application.
  2. The license Deactivation ID will be shown if the online deactivation will not be available.

2.4. Confirmed deactivation case

The license deactivation, about which confirmation is received in the license owner account is treated as confirmed deactivation case.

The deactivation confirmation can be received either online, during online deactivation, or offline, with the help of the License Deactivation ID, which is shown during the offline deactivation.

The deactivation from the License Activation Management screen without the License Deactivation ID, is treated as NOT confirmed deactivation and decreases the rehost limit. An exception is, if after such the deactivation, automatic confirmation is received from the application side that the license has been also deactivated on the application side.

2.5. Rehost limit

The rehost limit is the number of available, not confirmed, deactivations from the License Activation Management screen. By default such number is 1 for the each obtained license per year. The confirmed deactivation case from the application side will not decrease the rehost limit.

If the rehost limit is exceeded you can request extension from your dedicated account executive by filling the reason of the request and clicking the Request Rehost Increase button.


3. License Activation Management Screen

The License Activation Management screen is available in the license owner account (login to www.nomagic.com and select License Activation Management menu item at the right side of page).

The License Activation Management screen is dedicated for the licenses activation management:

The screen consists of the following parts:

  • Installation status filter - the filter allows to filter installation results to Activated, Deactivated, Registered Only, or Illegal.
  • Enable license select during online activation option controls the license selection during online activation:
    • If selected – the end user may choose which license to activate from all available licenses in the license owner account.
    • If not selected – the end user may activate only the license according to the used not activated key.

    Note: Clear this option if you want to control which licenses will be delivered for which users.

  • The list of registration/activation records displays the list of the end users' data recorded during registration, online, and offline activation.
  • Create New License Activation Record button – click to create new offline activation record.
  • The list of available to activate productsshows the list of products that can be activated. The following columns are available:
    • Total – the total number of purchases
    • Not activated yet – the number of licenses not yet activated and available for activation.
    • Rehosts– the number of rehosts available. The rehost limit is the number of available not confirmed deactivations from the License Activation Management screen. By default such number is 1 for the each obtained license per year. The confirmed deactivation case from the application side will not decrease the rehost limit.

      If the rehost limit is exceeded, you cannot activate license of this product. However you can request extension from your dedicated account executive by filling the reason of the request and clicking the Request Rehost Increase button.

  • In the License Deactivation section confirm the offline license deactivation by entering License Deactivation ID, which is provided by application during offline activation. After confirming the deactivation, the license is returned and can be activated on another machine. For more information about the confirmed deactivation, refer to the Deactivating a license in the application section.
  • Request Rehost Increase section. If the rehost limit is exceeded, you can request extension from your dedicated account executive by filling the reason of the request and clicking the Request Rehost Increase button. For more information, refer to the Rehost limit section.
  • Request license key files – you can download or request to send to your email activated licenses (starting from v16.9) by clicking the button in the Get activated key column.

    Also you can request not activated or older products versions key files in the Request not activated license key files section.

    Note: Beginning with v16.9, the commercial license activation is required. Commercial activated licenses are locked to the particular machine.


3.1 Review activation records

You can review activation records in the License Activation Management screen by setting Installation status filter to Activated. All online and offline activation records will be listed.

3.2 Marking installations as illegal

  1. Login to the license owner account on www.nomagic.com.
  2. Click the License Activation Management item in the Members menu.
    Table with all registration and activations records is shown.
  3. In the Activated products column, click the installation record, which should be marked as illegal.
    The Edit License Activation Record dialog appears
  4. Go to Deactivate tab and click the Deactivate all licenses and mark installation as illegal button.
  5. The end user license will be withdrawn from MagicDraw application on the next start-up.

4. Rehosting - moving the license from one machine to another

Moving of the activated (locked to the particular machine) licenses from one machine to another is called rehosting.

To rehost a license:

  1. Deactivate the license on the old installation.
  2. Install an application on the new machine.
  3. Activate the license on the new installation.

Note: Use deactivation from the application side or the deactivation with the License Deactivation ID. It is treated as the confirmed deactivation case and does not decrease an available rehost limit.

5. Common questions

Is the registration required during activation?

Yes. The user registration is required in order to obtain the commercial activated key.

Registration will help us to provide you with:

  • Customer support. Issues, questions, and suggestions can be reported and existing ones tracked on http://www.nomagic.com/support.html.
  • Access to early releases and evaluations.
  • New versions, patches, and updates.

What are the reasons why application licenses are deactivated / not activated?

  1. License has been deactivated manually from the License Activation Management screen or from the application License Manager dialog.
  2. An application has been uninstalled.
  3. MAC address of the machine has been changed.
  4. Not activated key has been added.

During the online activation, I’m suggested to select licenses from the wrong account

It is identified that your purchases are under the wrong account on www.nomagic.com. You need to change the identification.

To change identification records:

  1. Start application
  2. Go to the License Manager dialog
  3. Apply the new license key file (generated from the license owner account).
    NOTE: The last applied license key file is used during the identification.
  4. Start activation process

During the activation I’m receiving message that there are no purchases available.

There can be several reasons:

  1. Purchase transaction has not been accomplished yet - products are not paid. The commercial license activation is needed after the purchase transaction has been completed.
  2. During the identification request you have chosen wrong license file pointing to wrong account. Please follow the link for solution.
  3. During the identification you used login name and password to identify the license owner account, however account is empty. Use the license owner login name and password for identification.
  4. You are activating a version of license that have not been purchased yet. Please contact you account executive at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
