Webinar 1 2016 - Moving from Documents to Models MBSE

Tuesday, 23 February 2016
03:00 PM GMT, 09:00 AM CST, 10:00 AM EST, 04:00 PM CET

Many organizations recognize the value of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) as in the past they experienced a lot of pain in trying to engineer complex systems using documents, spreadsheets, and isolated diagrams. International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) promote MBSE as the modern approach to Systems Engineering (SE) and they envision that MBSE will become a common practice and a synonym of SE by 2020. While organizations understand potential benefits of MBSE, they struggle in changing their engineering practices from document-based to model-based and establishing a strong modeling culture.

In this webinar, we will suggest an evolutionary process for adopting MBSE, which allows quick wins and minimizes risks. Furthermore, we will share some important lessons learned in supporting organizations on their journey to adopting MBSE, identify common pitfalls to be avoided, and provide recommendations for solving specific challenges such as establishing modeling framework, educating system engineers on modeling languages, methods, and tools, importing data from documents to models, using models to produce document artifacts for specific stakeholders, managing model quality, integrating modeling tool(s) into the overall chain of engineering tools, using models as organizational knowledge base and promoting collaborative approach to model creation, usage, and governance.

The session content is based on working experience of adopting MBSE in many global organizations representing different industries – automotive, aerospace, space, transportation, defense, medical devices, mobile devices, telecommunications and others. Be sure that you will get some new ideas and inspirations for your journey from documents to models!

The session demonstrates
  • Typical engineering practices (V models with documents, regulations, standards)
  • MBSE as promoted by INCOSE
  • MBSE infrastructure: language, approach, and tool
  • Common pitfalls to avoid
  • Evolutionary approach to adopting MBSE
  • Solving specific challenges
  • Recommendations for getting started

The presentation takes about fifty minutes and the question-answer section – about ten. The audience are able to submit questions in a written form throughout the webinar.

The session is hosted by Dr. Darius Silingas, Senior Solution Architect at No Magic, Inc.

Dr. Darius Silingas has been with No Magic since 1998. During 18 years at No Magic, he played various roles (Developer, Systems Analyst, Project Manager, Head of Department, Solutions Architect) and was involved in multiple international projects. Recently, he was nominated for a role of Senior Solution Architect, which is responsible for supporting strategic No Magic clients by helping them to adopt model-based systems engineering practices using MagicDraw/Cameo Systems Modeler product line.

Darius is an outstanding expert in model-based systems engineering (MBSE). He provided consulting, training, and custom development services for 100+ organizations in 24 countries including GE, Siemens, Ford, BMW, SAAB, eBay, Yahoo!, JPMorgan Chase, Nokia, Nokia Networks, Abbott, Hospira, Kongsberg and many other famous organizations. He regularly writes papers, runs webinars and presents at conferences about best practices of model-based engineering, innovating R&D processes by introducing model-based engineering practices, and establishing model-based engineering culture in large organizations. Darius has Ph.D. in Informatics and is OMG Certified Systems Modeler, UML Professional, and Expert in Business Process Management.
