Powerful Integration With MagicDraw® Makes Visual Ontology Modeler a Unique Diagram-based Semantic Technology Authoring Tool
Allen, Texas and New York, NY. (May 4, 2014) -- Thematix Partners, LLC, a semantic technology solutions provider, and No Magic Inc., the leading global provider of integrated modeling, simulation, and analysis services and solutions, today announced the general availability of the Visual Ontology Modeler ("VOM") -- the first and only ontology editor to use UML's well known graphical notation for building component-based ontologies.
VOM is a UML-based graphical user interface, delivered as a plug-in to No Magic MagicDraw, that enables drag-and-drop ontology creation and a visual "audit" of complex relationships. It is a multi-user and network-based environment for ontology creation, with ontology authoring wizards for creating and maintaining required UML® model elements, as well as extensive import/export support for RDF, RDFS and OWL – the W3C standard languages for expressing semantics on the web.
VOM enables faster, more reliable ontology creation, editing and review, making new kinds of semantic projects feasible. Because of its unique graphical approach to ontology creation, VOM provides a critical bridge in understanding between the software architect and the subject matter expert – critical for developing ontologies that properly model the real world. VOM models can leverage existing UML and MOF accessible business information, and can be linked to other UML-based models (e.g., SysML), providing a semantic overlay that can be used to reason about these models or to express model constraints that can be validated using OWL-DL reasoners.
"After an extensive and successful beta period, we are pleased to finally be able to make VOM available to the general public," said Elisa Kendall, Thematix partner and the creator of VOM – "MagicDraw is an ideal environment for VOM because of its comprehensive and longstanding support for UML." Kendall stated that she is "very proud to join the Cameo® Suite of solutions, providing a truly visual, round-trip tool for ontology modeling and development."
"Semantic technology is crossing the chasm from an academic research vision to a powerful business tool for representing the concepts and rules that business people deal with every day," said Gary Duncanson, President and CEO of No Magic. "We are pleased to be among the first in the market with a tool that enables the system architect to work with the business subject matter expert to author systems that enable machines to understand real-world concepts."
A beta version of VOM is already in use within some of the largest financial institutions in the United States, and it has been used extensively by the Enterprise Data Management Council to create a new standard issued by the Object Management Group (OMG®) – the Financial Industry Business Ontology (FIBO). In addition, a wide variety of academics in universities from across the globe are currently using VOM in their research endeavors.
As a plug-in to MagicDraw, it is available for Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems.
