Modeler Mentoring

A customized program for training and developing world-class data, process and systems modelers and builders for your organization

Mentoring for business analysts, information architects and developers

modeler mentoring 45474094Efficient and effective development, design and analysis of business processes and systems is a key differentiator found in high performing, profitable enterprises.

The required technical skills needed to sustain rapid business growth are becoming increasingly specialized and currently are in short supply. As a result, enterprises are turning to customized in-house mentoring as a means of maintaining their competitive edge.

Enterprises that encourage key staff to achieve world class skills and capabilities, find that this culture dramatically improves the corporate bottom line via better systems, while at the same time attracting, motivating and retaining the best people.

Advantages of mentoring versus training

The required skills needed to build a high performance enterprise are best learned by employees performing these skills on the job. Periodic, one day or one-week courses, typically do not enable the employee to learn by doing in their respective workplaces. These courses are often found to be helpful but clearly not transformative.

In contrast, mentoring provides performance skills and feedback using real world work projects in a defined time period, while assuring that student capabilities are measured, optimized and guaranteed.

Mentoring Curriculum

The mentoring program described here is based on monthly cycles. The program is customized to a project or similar work in progress at the participant's workplace. This project is agreed upon in advance with each participant and their manager. This practical work is designed to deliver value to the participant's current on the job projects/initiatives.

For best results, we recommend a group no smaller than three participants and no more than ten.

Day one: A half day in the classroom. The first half is devoted to group review of practical work from the prior month. The last half is spent on formal skills and development of practical on the job assignments.

Weeks one and two: Participants use the skills learned in the classroom session on project work, as agreed upon with their team manager.

Mid month: A one-hour, one-to-one session with the mentor. Progress on practical work is reviewed, issues discussed and resolved, guidance given and problems resolved.

Weeks three and four: The participant continues with the practical work to completion.

End of month: Practical on the job work is passed to the mentor, assessed and feedback is provided.

Throughout the month: The mentor is available to support participants who are encouraged to collaborate and discuss their practical work with each other.

Program Duration

modeler mentoring 3145130A three-month cycle will typically start a mentoring program. Longer-term programs of up to two years can be defined based on assessment, participant feedback and enterprise goals.

Here is a typical monthly Mentoring Program time commitment

  • Half day face to face mentoring session at the start of that month
  • Individual one hour sessions with participants roughly two weeks following the first session
  • A full one day workshop at the start of the next month to review the past month’s progress and begin the cycle

Reading and research in the subject matter is encouraged in the participant's own time.

Attendee Feedback and Assessment

Class participants are given a one hour assessment task at the end of each quarter. A structured assessment tool is used to measure their target competency. Participants are then given personal feedback and an agreed upon development plan based on participant results and goals.

Feedback it also given to the firm and the participant's managers, as agreed upon at the beginning of the program.

Mentoring Venue

modeler mentoring 35863815Face to Face delivery of the monthly classes at the participant site is an effective approach. This can be done in North America, the UK and Australia. Other locations will be considered, depending on location.

A web based Mentoring Program is also an effective approach if the mentor is available by web during the entire mentoring period.

Cost

The costs are dependent on the level of competency and the complexity of the work, not the number of participants. Typically, less advanced groups are less costly because their work is simpler and the underlying concepts are foundational.
