1. Installing Cameo Systems Modeler

1.1. Installing Cameo Systems Modeler – using installer

Windows Vista/ 7/ 8/ 10/ Server 2012/ Server 2012 R2

  1. Before you begin, ensure that your computer meets the minimal system requirements for running the program.
  2. Download either:
    • Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_win.exe (Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_PE_win.exe of Personal edition or Cameo Systems Modeler_Reader_<version number>_win.exe of Reader edition) for 32-bit Windows.
    • Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_win64.exe (Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_PE_win64.exe of Personal edition or Cameo Systems Modeler_Reader_<version number>_win64.exe of Reader edition) for 64-bit Windows.
  3. Double-click the installer.
  4. If the User Account Control dialog appears asking your permission for the installer to make changes in your computer, click Yes.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Cameo Systems Modeler.
  6. To start Cameo Systems Modeler, do one of the following:
    • On the taskbar in Windows, click the Start button, and then, click Cameo Systems Modeler.
    • Open the Cameo Systems Modeler installation\bin folder and double-click the magicdraw.exe file.

OS X

  1. Before you begin, ensure that your computer meets the minimal system requirements for running the application.
  2. If you use earlier versions than Cameo Systems Modeler 17.0.5, 17.0.4 SP2, you must have the JVM installed on your computer.  See the list of recommended Java versions: http://www.nomagic.com/support/jvm-list.html
  3. Download Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_mac.dmg (Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_PE_mac.dmg of Personal edition or Cameo Systems Modeler_Reader_<version number>_mac.dmg of Reader edition).
  4. Double-click the installer.
  5. In the Cameo Systems Modeler installation window, drag the Cameo Systems Modeler folder to the Applications folder.
  6. Close the Cameo Systems Modeler installation window.
  7. To start Cameo Systems Modeler, open the Application / Cameo Systems Modeler installation folder and double-click the Cameo Systems Modeler.app file.
  8. If the message appears asking your permission to open the file, click Open.

Unix

  1. Ensure that your computer meets the minimal system requirements for running the application.
  2. You must have the JVM installed on your computer. See the list of recommended Java versions: http://www.nomagic.com/support/jvm-list.html
  3. Download Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_unix.sh (Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_PE_unix.sh of Personal edition or Cameo Systems Modeler_Reader_<version number>_unix.sh of Reader edition).
  4. From the Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_unix.sh shortcut menu, select the Properties command and then click to select the Allow executing file as program check box. 
  5. Double-click the installer.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Cameo Systems Modeler.
  7. To start Cameo Systems Modeler, open the Cameo Systems Modeler installation/bin folder and double-click the Cameo Systems Modeler file.

1.2. Installing Cameo Systems Modeler – using no-install package

You can download the no-install package to run the product on any operating system, compatible with Java 7.

  1. You must have the JVM installed on your computer.  See the list of recommended Java versions: http://www.nomagic.com/support/jvm-list.html
  2. Ensure that your computer meets the minimal system requirements for running the application.
  3. Download Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_no_install.zip (Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_PE_no_install.zip of Personal edition or Cameo Systems Modeler_Reader_<version number>_no_install.zip of Reader edition).
  4. Extract files.
  5. Set Java home:
    1. Open the Cameo Systems Modeler.properties file, which can be found in Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_no_install\bin folder.
    2. In the JAVA_HOME line, add the path to the Java software. For example, on Windows OS:
      JAVA_HOME=C\:\\Program Files\\Java\\jdk1.7.0_67\\jre
  1. To start Cameo Systems Modeler, according to OS, do one of the following:
    • On Windows OS - open the Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_no_install\bin folder and double click the Cameo Systems Modeler.exe file.
    • On OS X - open the Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_no_install folder and double-click the Cameo Systems Modeler.app file.
    • On Unix – open the Cameo Systems Modeler_<version number>_no_install folder and double-click the Cameo Systems Modeler file.

1.3. Uninstalling Cameo Systems Modeler

Windows Vista/ 7/ 8/ 10/ Server 2012/ Server 2012 R2

To uninstall Cameo Systems Modeler, in the Cameo Systems Modeler installation > UninstallerData folder, double-click the Uninstall Cameo Systems Modeler file.

OS X

To uninstall Cameo Systems Modeler, right-click the Cameo Systems Modeler installation folder and from the shortcut menu, select Move to Trash.

Unix

To uninstall Cameo Systems Modeler, in the Cameo Systems Modeler installation > UninstallerData folder, double-click the Uninstall Cameo Systems Modeler file.

1.4. Removing Cameo Systems Modeler no-install package

Windows Vista/ 7/ 8/ 10/ Server 2012/ Server 2012 R2

To remove Cameo Systems Modeler, delete the Cameo Systems Modeler installation folder.

OS X

To remove Cameo Systems Modeler, right-click the Cameo Systems Modeler installation folder, and then, from the shortcut menu, select Move to Trash.

Unix

To remove Cameo Systems Modeler, delete the Cameo Systems Modeler installation folder.

2. Starting Cameo Systems Modeler for the first time and applying license

2.1. Starting Cameo Systems Modeler with demo, evaluation or academic license  

NOTE:  License activation is not required for the demo, evaluation and academic licenses.

2.1.1. Starting Cameo Systems Modeler

  1. Save the license key file locally (after purchasing Cameo Systems Modeler the license key file is emailed to you).
  2. Start Cameo Systems Modeler for the first time.
  3. In the Import Configuration dialog, do one of the following:
    • If you want to import the environment options from an earlier Cameo Systems Modeler version, select the location and click Import.
    • If you want to use the default environment options, click Use Default.
  4. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Agreement dialog, read the license agreement and click I agree.

2.1.2. Unlocking Cameo Systems Modeler

  1. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Manager dialog, click the Select License Key Files button, and then in the Select License Key File dialog, select the license key file. Click Open.
  2. In the License Configuration dialog, learn about the license information and click OK.

NOTE: for the Academic license use in class, you may consider saving configuration files (including the license key) in Cameo Systems Modeler installation directory. Refer to MagicDraw UserManual.pdf document at http://www.nomagic.com/support/documentation.html for instructions on how to change Cameo Systems Modeler configuration file location.

2.1.3. Registering installation

  • In the Registration dialog, fill out the registration form and click Register.

2.1.4. Performing other actions

  1. In the Evaluation Startup Message dialog, learn about plugins and their expiration date and click OK.
  2. In the Cameo Systems Modeler Startup dialog, select the perspective or integrations if required. Click OK, when finished. For more information, see the “Customizing and Selecting Perspective” section in MagicDraw UserManual.pdf.

2.2. Starting Cameo Systems Modeler with commercial license and activating it - internet connection is present

Preconditions: You have the account created on www.nomagic.com
You have purchased the product and received the license keys.
Your computer has internet connection.

2.2.1. Starting Cameo Systems Modeler

  1. Start Cameo Systems Modeler for the first time.
  2. In the Import Configuration dialog, do one of the following:
    • If you want to import the environment options from an earlier Cameo Systems Modeler version, select the location and click Import.
    • If you want to use the default environment options, click Use Default.
  3. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Agreement dialog, read the license agreement and click I agree if you want to continue using software.

2.2.2. Performing identification to obtain licenses automatically and activating Cameo Systems Modeler license online

IMPORTANT:
To determine a license owner, the user identification is requested during activation process.

The commercial license activation is required only after the purchase transaction has been completed. The activation process allows receiving the commercial license dedicated for the particular machine.

  1. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Manager dialog, click the Activate button.
  2. In the Activation dialog, click Online Activation.  
  3. In the Identification Request dialog, do one of the following:
    • Click the Select License Key File button. Then in the Select License Key File dialog, select the license key file and click Open.
    • Enter the login name and password of the license owner and click Identify.
    • In the Registration dialog, fill out the registration and click Register. Note that registration is mandatory - without registration you will not be able to activate.
  4. In the Select Edition / Plugin dialog, select an edition and plugins to activate and click OK.
  5. In the License Configuration dialog, learn about the license information and click OK.

2.2.3. Applying not activated commercial license, received after purchase and activating Cameo Systems Modeler license online

IMPORTANT: The commercial license activation is required after the purchase transaction has been completed. The activation process allows receiving the commercial license dedicated for the particular machine.

Registration is mandatory - without registration you will not be able to activate.

  1. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Manager dialog, click the Select License Key Files button and select the not activated license key file, which you have received after the purchase, and click Open.
  2. In the Activation dialog, click Online Activation.  
  3. In the Registration dialog, fill out the registration and click Register.
  4. In the Select Edition / Plugin dialog, click to select the edition and one or more plugins.  Click OK, when finished.
  5. In the License Configuration dialog, learn about the license information and click OK.

2.2.4. Performing other actions

  1. In the Evaluation Startup Message dialog, learn about plugins and their expiration dates and click OK.
  2. In the Cameo Systems Modeler Startup dialog, select the perspective or integrations if required. Click OK, when you have finished. For more information, see the “Customizing and Selecting Perspective” section in MagicDraw UserManual.pdf.

2.3. Starting Cameo Systems Modeler with commercial license – no internet connection present

Preconditions: You have purchased the product and received the license keys.

Your computer has internet connection.

2.3.1. Starting Cameo Systems Modeler

  1. Save the license key file locally (you will receive the license key file to your mailbox after purchasing Cameo Systems Modeler).
  2. Start Cameo Systems Modeler for the first time.
  3. In the Import Configuration dialog, do one of the following:
    • If you want to import the environment options from an earlier Cameo Systems Modeler version, select the location and click Import.
    • If you want to use the default environment options, click Use Default.
  4. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Agreement dialog, read the license agreement and click I agree.

2.3.2. Activating Cameo Systems Modeler license in offline mode

IMPORTANT: The commercial license activation is required after the purchase transaction has been completed. The activation process allows receiving the commercial license dedicated for the particular machine.
  1. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Manager dialog, click the Activate button.
  2. In the Activation dialog, click Offline Activation.
  3. In the Offline Activation dialog, copy the text from the Host ID box. Note that without Host ID you will not be able to activate online.
  4. Open a new document, paste the Host ID and then save the document. Note that do not close dialogs in Cameo Systems Modeler. You will return to them after the few steps.
  5. On the computer that has a connection to the Internet, go to www.nomagic.com.
  6. In the upper-right corner, click the Login button and then login with the license owner account.
  7. At the upper-right side of the page, under Members, click License Activation Management.
  8. Do one of the following:
    • In the License Activation Management page, in the first table, found the activation records that match you Host ID and under the Activated products column, click Click to edit. In the Edit License Activation Record window, choose the license to activate and click Save when finished. In the activation records table the record is displayed.
    • Click the Create New License Activation Record button. In the Create New License Activation Record window, fill out the form, paste the Host ID, and choose the license to activate. Click Save when finished. In the activation records table, the new record is displayed.
  9. In the activation records table, in the Get key column, click the send Send button to receive the license key by email or click the download Download button to save the key locally. You will receive the activated license key file, for example, Activated_key_For_<first name>_<last name>.lic.
  10. In Cameo Systems Modeler, the Offline Activation dialog, click the Select License Key Files button.
  11. In the Select License Key Files dialog, select the Activated_Key_For_<first name>_<last name>.lic file and click Open.
  12. In the License Configuration dialog, learn about the license information and click OK.

2.3.3. Performing other actions

  • In the Cameo Systems Modeler Startup dialog, select the perspective or integrations if required. Click OK, when finished. For more information, see the “Customizing and Selecting Perspective” section in MagicDraw UserManual.pdf.

3. Deactivating Cameo Systems Modeler license

The deactivation is the process allowing the return of activated licenses to the license pool. You may remove and return all activated (locked to the particular machine) commercial licenses by deactivating them.

3.1. Deactivating Cameo Systems Modeler license - internet connection present

  1. Start Cameo Systems Modeler.
  2. From the Help menu, select License Manager.
  3. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Manager dialog, click the Deactivate button.
  4. When you receive the message asking if you would like to deactivate the used licenses, click Yes.
  5. Restart Cameo Systems Modeler.

3.2. Deactivating Cameo Systems Modeler license – no internet connection present

  1. Start Cameo Systems Modeler.
  2. From the Help menu, select License Manager.
  3. In the Cameo Systems Modeler License Manager dialog, click the Deactivate button.
  4. When you receive the message asking if you would like to deactivate the used licenses, click Yes.
  5. In the HTTP Proxy Server Connection dialog, click OK.
  6. In the Offline License Deactivation dialog, copy the text from the License Deactivation ID box.
  7. Open a new document, paste the License Deactivation ID and then save the document.
  8. In Cameo Systems Modeler, the Offline License Deactivation dialog, click OK.
  9. When you receive the message informing that Cameo Systems Modeler will exit, click OK.
  10. On the computer that has a connection to the Internet, go to www.nomagic.com.
  11. In the upper-right corner, click the Login button and then login with the license owner account.
  12. At the upper-right side of the page, under Members, click License Activation Management.
  13. In the Enter License Deactivation ID to free slot box, paste the text from the License Deactivation ID box.
  14. Click the Submit button.

3.3. Deactivating Cameo Systems Modeler license if the installation has been lost or corrupted

IMPORTANT! This deactivation should be used only if the deactivation in the product is not available: if the installation has been lost or corrupted. This method of deactivation decreases the available rehost limit.

  1. Go to www.nomagic.com.
  2. In the upper-right corner, click the Login button and then login with the license owner account.
  3. At the upper-right side of the page, under Members, click License Activation Management.
  4. Under the Activated products column, click Click to edit.
  5. In the Edit License Activation Record window, click to open the Deactivate tab.
  6. Click to select the license and click the Deactivate selected button.
  7. When you receive the message asking if you would like to deactivate the selected licenses, click Yes.
  8. In the Available to activate products list table, under the Rehosts column you will see that the allowed rehost number decreased. For example, if the rehost number is 1 of 2, you will be able to deactivate offline only once.

4. Moving Cameo Systems Modeler to another computer (rehosting license)

Moving the activated (locked to the particular computer) license from one machine to another is called rehosting.

  1. Deactivate the license on the old Cameo Systems Modeler installation.

NOTE: Use deactivation from the software side or the deactivation with the License Deactivation ID. It is treated as the confirmed deactivation and does not decrease available rehost limit.

  1. Install Cameo Systems Modeler on the new computer.
  2. Start Cameo Systems Modeler and activate the license.

5. Updating Cameo Systems Modeler

Client projects are not forward compatible. Therefore, it is not possible to open project files with an earlier program version (for example, version 17.0.5) after projects are saved with the later program version (for example, version 18.0).

Before updating Cameo Systems Modeler with floating keys, do not forget to apply a new key to the FlexNet license server (for version 16.8 and later).

5.1. Automatic Cameo Systems Modeler update

The automatic update checks the update servers and offers the latest program versions and service packs automatically.

  1. Start Cameo Systems Modeler.
  2. Save your project before continuing, as Cameo Systems Modeler will shut down.
  3. If you are using a client with Teamwork Server, disconnect from the Teamwork Server before updating.
  4. On the Help menu, click Check for Updates.
  5. If updates are found, the Update Information dialog appears. Do one of the following:
    • Click Update to New Version, to apply the latest released product version.
    • Click Apply Patch, to apply the latest released service pack.
  6. When you receive the message asking if you would like to download the newer Java version, click Yes. For more information about the recommended Java version, see http://www.nomagic.com/support/jvm-list.html.
  7. When you receive the message that the software will shut down, click OK.
  8. If you are updating to the new version, when you receive the message that the deactivation is successful, click OK. Then start Cameo Systems Modeler.

TIP: To check the Cameo Systems Modeler version, from the Help menu, select About Cameo Systems Modeler and click the Licensing tab.

NOTE: If you are using a client integrated with any IDE, please reintegrate the client with this IDE after updating.

5.2. Manual Cameo Systems Modeler update

If your computer does not have Internet connection or an automatic updating service does not work, it is possible to update Cameo Systems Modeler manually.

  1. Deactivate the current Cameo Systems Modeler license.
  2. Download, install, and start the new Cameo Systems Modeler version.

TIP. To check the Cameo Systems Modeler version, from the Help menu, select About Cameo Systems Modeler and then click the Licensing tab.

NOTE: If you are using a client integrated with any IDE, please reintegrate the client with this IDE after updating.
